Seasoned matador Anthony Quinn appears to be the victim of " the fear" when he runs from a bull-fight. But it is a secret that has him on the run, a secret that Maureen O'Hara will stop at nothing to discover. Together they confront the sins of his past, at the risk of consequences no less than life itself.
Due to the constraints of the infamous Production Code, graphic scenes of the bullfights had to be avoided. Ironically, this constraint forced director Budd Boetticher to concentrate on the pathos of the matador as well as the physical beauty of Mexico, as he produced one of the most psychologically gripping and visually stunning films of its time.
Filmed in Twentieth Century Fox's landmark widescreen process, Cinemascope, it is Quinn's third film as a matador, and his fourth collaborative effort with the director.
